| RP,
third in most number of ship accidents in Asia
THE Philippines ranks third among Asian countries in the
number of sea mishaps, next only to Indonesia and Japan.
Data from 1986 to 2000 showed that the country has recorded
a total of 1,343 marine incidents while Indonesia has recorded 1,352 and
Japan has 1,600.
The Philippines, however has the most number of lives
lost resulting from such incidents. A high-ranking officer of the Maritime
Industry Authority (MARINA) said the high percentage of lives lost was
due to weak search and rescue capabilities of the country, compared with
the two other countries.
He stressed that the search and rescue capabilities of
the two countries are far more advanced and efficient, saving more lives
during such accidents. |
