Vice President Noli ‘Kabayan’ De Castro made a commitment
to the men and women of the Philippine Coast Guard to include them in the
national government’s housing program for civil servants.
The veepee made this official pronouncement during the
105th Founding Anniversary celebration of the Philippine Coast Guard on
October 18, 2006 held at its headquarters in South Harbor, Port Area, Manila.
“Gagarantiyahin ko ang tulong sa Coast Guard kasi ginawa
ninyo akong Commodore,” stated Vice President De Castro in jest during
his keynote speech, following his induction and oath taking as an honorary
Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary (PCGA) officer with a rank of “Commodore.”
The rank of ‘Commodore’ is equivalent to a one-star general
in the Army and Airforce and a Chief Superintendent of the Philippine National
Police.
The vice president took his oath as PCGA officer before
Transportation and Communications Secretary Leandro Mendoza, who was also
present during the event, and PCG Commandant VAdm. Arthur N. Gosingan.
In his keynote speech, the vice president cited the key
role of the Philippine Coast Guard in relation to maritime safety and marine
environment protection. He cited that such a crucial role deserves due
recognition from the national government and there is no better way for
such than to assure each and everyone donning a PCG uniform to get a chance
to also own a home.
De Castro also assured the PCG of administrative support
in order to strengthen its mandate as the country’s rightful lead enforcer
in the aspects of maritime safety and security. Some of the major functions
of the PCG have been taken over by other agencies and the PCG’s role has
been relegated into being a deputy or assisting agency, greatly curtailing
its mandate.
The remark and assurance drew a welcomed appreciation
from the men and women of PCG, who came in full force to attend the important
celebration.
During the program, the PCG also gave out awards to outstanding
PCG personnel for their remarkable performance on the job, handed out by
the VP, Secretary Mendoza and VAdm. Gosingan. Several individuals and institutions
were also given awards for their support to the PCG as well as its vision
and mission of keeping Philippine waters safe, secure and free from pollution.
