Guard celebrates 101st anniversary
‘Never in the history of the
Philippine Coast Guard has it been more prepared than now in ensuring safer
travel aboard ships.’
TRUE to its avowed mission of “Safer Ships and Cleaner
Seas,” the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) showed how it was able to guarantee
hassle-free travel and maintain a continuing and sustained cleanup of Philippine
waters during its 101st anniversary celebration held at the PCG Headquarters
on Oct. 23.
“Never in the history of the Philippine Coast Guard has
it been as prepared as now in ensuring safer travel aboard ships,” PCG
Commandant Vice Admiral Ruben Lista told Tinig ng Marino.
According to Lista, his men confiscated 390 firearms in
line with its for safer ships. “This is significant in terms of the government’s
campaign against criminality, where these guns will probably be used,”
Lista said.
During the celebration, the firearms – 338 .38 caliber
revolvers, 41 .357 caliber revolvers, nine .45 caliber pistols with four
magazines, and one Ingram machine pistol were turned over to the Firearms
and Explosive Division of the Philippine National Police.
“The guns were made in Cebu and are locally known as paltik,”
the PCG chief said. The said firearms were confiscated by elements of Coast
Guard District Central Eastern Visayas under commodore Miguel Tabares.
Likewise, PCG commissioned 10 K9 bomb-sniffing dogs during
the celebration with no other than Department of Transportation and Communications
Secretary Leandro R. Mendoza as guest of honor.
“The K9s will augment the capability of the PCG in curbing
criminality and terroristic activities in the country in support to Gloria
Macapagal-Arroyo’s Peace and Order program,” Lista stressed.
But the celebration will not be complete without honoring
the outstanding men and women of PCG, including civilians, who have rendered
service in pursuit of the Coast Guards objectives.
For his part, Lista expressed gratitude to all those who
supported the PCG in its relentless campaign to enforce maritime law and
make our seas safer and cleaner for travel and trade. |
