Ship Rescues 3 Pinoy Fishermen from Sinking Boat
A containership of Evergreen
Marine Corp, the M/V Uni-Patriot, came to the rescue of three Filipino
fishermen who were precariously hanging for their dear lives in their sinking
fishing boat somewhere off the west coast of Mindoro Island.

fishermen in distress from their sinking fishing boat
The vessel was sailing from Kaohsiung
in Taiwan on the way to Surabaya, Indonesia when it sighted on February
9, 2006 the sinking fishing boat, with the three fishermen almost ceaselessly
waving their hands for help.
Capt. Hung Keh-Hsin, M/V Uni-Patriot’s
Taiwanese master then altered the course of the vessel heading to the fishing
boat. Upon getting close to the fishermen in distress, Filipino Chief Officer
Melecio G. Pascue instructed the crew to facilitate the rescue arrangement
on the ship’s portside.

onboard the Uni-Patriot after the rescue
The rescued three fishermen were
Jiemy Arizala, 23; Roger Pioquinto, 40; and Nathaniel Duba Jr., who all
hail from Mamburao in Occidental Mindoro. Apparently, their fishing boat
developed a leak that they were not able to plug causing it to gradually
sink. They were quite fortunate that M/V Uni-Patriot was able to spot them
on the height of their serious dilemma.
Upon rescuing the three fishermen
and providing them with the appropriate medical attention onboard, the
vessel proceeded to Surabaya. The master immediately informed the Evergreen
office about the rescue, who in turn communicated with Cargo Safeway, as
the manning agent in the Philippines, to verify information on the whereabouts
of the three Filipino seafarers and also arrange for their proper disembarkation
and eventual repatriation from Indonesia.
On February 10, 2006, Mayor Joel
C. Panaligan of Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro sent a written confirmation
to Cargo Safeway saying that the three fishermen were indeed his constituents
and that the three were reported to have been missing since the first week
of February.
When the M/V Uni-Patriot reached
Surabaya, the master, together with the Evergreen Representative, then
took the three rescued Filipino fishermen to Jakarta on February 15, 2006
and officially handed them over to the care of the Philippine Embassy in
Jakarta.
The
three Filipino fishermen climb the rope ladder from the Uni-Patriot’s port
side.
The three fishermen were received
by Ms. Bernardita L. Catalla, First Secretary and Consul of the Philippines
in the Jakarta embassy, who eventually arranged for the repatriation of
the Filipinos back to their families in Occidental Mindoro.
It took the Philippine Embassy in
Jakarta about 10 days to send the three Filipino fishermen back home because
it was trying to secure fund for the repatriation. Eventually, the Department
of Foreign Affairs finally agreed to shoulder the plane tickets for the
fishermen’s trip to the Philippines. The three fishermen got back in the
Philippines on February 25, 2006 and subsequently re-joined their respective
families in Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro. |
