IN SPITE of the rains and muddy grounds, the first day
of the First Maritime Invitational Shootfest was a big success. The friendly
shooting competition, which took place at the PNP NCRPO Firing Range, Camp
Bagong Diwa, Bicutan, Taguig, Metro Manila, last January 22-23, 2000, was
participated by beginners, amateurs, and professional gun enthusiasts not
only from the seafaring industry but also from Philippine Coast Guard and
Auxiliary, AFP Reservists, PNP and other law enforcers, celebrities and
members of media.
The shootfest’s objective is to promote safety in handling
of firearms, shooting proficiency, camaraderie, sportsmanship and individual
discipline.
According to Capt. Bernie Pitogo (PCGA), chairman of the
organizing committee, the increasing incidence of violence in the country
made it imperative for every peace-loving citizen to be vigilant for self-protection
as well as for the security of the family and property.
Pitogo said that one way of ensuring protection
is by acquiring a gun. "While it is very easy for all types of criminals,
including thieves and robbers, to acquire guns, civilians have no way of
neutralizing these elements except by relying on the police which more
often than not could not cope with the rising incidence of crimes," he
said, citing the shortage of law enforcers.
He explained that the only remedy to this shortage of
law enforcers is to enable responsible citizens to acquire a gun for protection.
However, owning a gun is not enough to ensure security. "A gun owner must
have a proper training in handling firearms and must have exercise patience
and be an example in discipline," he said, adding that gun ownership entails
responsibility, thus a gun owner will only use his firearm when his or
his family's security is threatened.
During the competition, participants were also given tips
on responsible gun ownership while honing skills in actual firing and hitting
targets.
There were a total of 118 participants in 25 divisions.
